For most visitors, the best place to stay in Kaş is the town centre, in the lanes around the harbour and the ancient theatre. You can walk to restaurants, the small town beaches and the quay where the boats to Kastellorizo (Meis) leave. If you want a pool with a big sea view and have a car, the Çukurbağ Peninsula is the quieter, more resort-like option.

We haven’t stayed at these hotels ourselves; we picked them on location, published details and guest ratings.

Short answer

  • Best area overall: Kaş town centre. Everything is walkable, including the harbour for the Kastellorizo boats, and most small hotels and pensions are here.
  • Best for a night before the Kastellorizo ferry: a central place such as Ates Pension, Hotel Ferah, Hideaway or Payam Hotel, so you can walk to the harbour in the morning without a taxi.
  • Best for swimming in town: the Küçükçakıl side, close to the small pebble beach and the hotels with sea platforms. Hotel Kayahan and SeaTown Hotel are in this part of town.
  • Best for a quiet pool-and-view holiday: the Çukurbağ Peninsula, with places such as Lyxos Hotel and Hill House Adult Only. Plan on a car or taxis.
  • Families: stay central and check child policies carefully. Several of the best-rated small hotels in Kaş set a minimum age (Payam takes children over 7; Lyxos and Hill House do not take young children).
  • Budget tip: family-run pensions in the centre are the cheapest way to stay walkable. Shoulder months (May, June, September, October) are easier on price and availability.

Kaş as a base

Kaş is a small harbour town on the Lycian coast, facing the Greek island of Kastellorizo, which the Turkish side calls Meis. It has no long sandy beach in town; swimming happens from pebble coves, rocky platforms and hotel decks. What it does have is a compact old centre with bougainvillea-covered lanes, a working harbour, a Hellenistic theatre on the western edge and Lycian rock tombs above the town. It is also a well-known diving and boat-trip base for the Kekova area.

For a ferry day trip, the important point is simple: boats to Kastellorizo leave from Kaş harbour in the town centre. If you stay within walking distance of the harbour, you can have breakfast, check out and walk to passport control. If you stay on the peninsula or further out, you need to plan a taxi or a drive and a place to leave the car.

Areas

Area Good for Distance from the Meis ferry quay Vibe
Town centre & harbour First-timers, one-night stays before the ferry, no car A few minutes’ walk from most central hotels Lively evenings, restaurants, bars, shops
Küçükçakıl Swimming, couples, a few nights in town Walkable to the centre Hotels along the coast road with sea decks, calmer than the harbour
Çukurbağ Peninsula Pool holidays, sea views, quiet Roughly 5–7 km by road from the centre for hotels at the far end Villas and boutique hotels, sunsets, little nightlife
Büyükçakıl Beach days, apartments Walk or short taxi to the centre Quiet residential edge of town around a larger pebble beach
Limanağzı A day out or a secluded stay Reached by boat across the harbour Small coves, beach clubs, no town feel
Kalkan / Kaputaş Day trips only (for ferry purposes) Drive back to Kaş for the boat Kalkan is a separate resort town; Kaputaş is a beach about 20 km from Kaş

Town centre & harbour

The centre is where most visitors should stay. The streets between the harbour, the main square and the theatre hold the majority of the small hotels, pensions, restaurants and dive shops. The ferry offices for the Kastellorizo boats are opposite the harbour, so a central room means you can buy tickets the day before and walk to the boat in the morning.

The trade-off is noise and parking. Bars around the harbour stay busy late in summer, and parking in the narrow lanes is limited, although several central hotels list on-site parking. Rooms higher up the slope get better views but mean a climb. Best for first-timers, people without a car and anyone combining a few nights in Kaş with the Kastellorizo crossing.

Küçükçakıl

Küçükçakıl (“small pebble”) is the stretch of coast just east of the harbour, named after a small pebble beach. Many hotels here sit along the coast road and have their own sea decks or ladders into the water, which is how swimming in Kaş usually works. You can still walk into the centre for dinner and to the harbour for the boats.

It is a little quieter than the harbour itself, though the coast road has traffic. Sea-facing rooms are the reason to stay here, so check exactly which room type you are booking. A good fit for couples and for anyone who wants to swim every day without driving.

Çukurbağ Peninsula

The long peninsula west of the harbour is where Kaş’s views of Kastellorizo are widest, and where many boutique hotels and villas with pools are. Hotels usually offer sea access by steps or swimming platforms. Sunsets over the island are the main draw.

The catch is distance. Hotels at the far end of the peninsula are listed at around 5–7 km by road from the centre, so you will drive or take taxis for dinner and for the ferry. Some properties have many stairs. Best for a relaxed pool-and-view holiday, less so for a single night before an early boat.

Büyükçakıl

Büyükçakıl (“big pebble”) is a larger pebble beach on the eastern edge of town, with apartments and smaller hotels around it. It is a reasonable base if you want a beach within reach of your room and do not mind a longer walk or a short taxi ride into the centre. Evenings are quiet. Suits families and longer stays in apartments.

Limanağzı

Limanağzı is the group of coves across the water from the harbour. You get there by boat from Kaş harbour, and there are beach clubs and a few places to stay. It is a pleasant day out for swimming, but staying here means depending on boats to reach town, so it does not suit a night before the ferry.

Kalkan and Kaputaş

Kalkan is a separate resort town west of Kaş with its own hotels and villas; Kaputaş is a well-known beach in a gorge on the road between the two, about 20 km from Kaş. If your main goal is the Kastellorizo crossing, staying in Kaş itself is simpler. If you are based in Kalkan, plan to drive or take a bus to Kaş for the boat and allow extra time.

Practical tips

Getting to the Kastellorizo ferry

Boats to Kastellorizo leave from Kaş harbour in the town centre. The ticket offices of the two operators that run the crossing are across from the harbour, and you can buy tickets the day before. Passport control is done at Kaş on the morning of departure and again on arrival in Kastellorizo. The crossing itself takes roughly 20–30 minutes, depending on the sea. Times, prices and operators are in our Kaş to Kastellorizo ferry guide.

From the town centre and the theatre area you walk to the harbour. From Küçükçakıl you can usually walk too, depending on how far along the coast road your hotel is. From the Çukurbağ Peninsula or Büyükçakıl, take a taxi or drive, and ask your hotel the day before about parking near the harbour and how early to leave.

If you want to stay on the island after the crossing, see where to stay in Kastellorizo.

When to book

The centre has many small hotels, but the best-rated ones fill up in July and August, and on the peninsula the small boutique hotels have few rooms. Book well ahead for summer, especially for sea-view rooms. In May, June, September and October it is easier to find space at shorter notice, and the sea is still warm enough to swim in September and October.

Getting around

Kaş centre is compact and easy on foot. A car is useful if you stay on the peninsula, want to visit Kaputaş beach or Kalkan, or plan trips inland. Parking in the old centre is tight, so if you have a car, choose a hotel that lists on-site parking.

Other crossings

Kaş is the departure point for Kastellorizo only. For crossings from other Turkish towns, see all routes.

FAQ

Is it better to stay in the centre or on the peninsula?

For a first visit, or if you are taking the boat to Kastellorizo, the centre is better: you walk everywhere, including to the harbour. The peninsula is better for a quiet holiday with a pool and a big view, as long as you are happy to drive or take taxis.

Where do the boats to Kastellorizo leave from?

From Kaş harbour in the town centre. The operators’ offices are opposite the harbour, and passport control is done in Kaş before boarding.

Does Kaş have a sandy beach?

Not in town. Swimming is from pebble beaches such as Küçükçakıl and Büyükçakıl, from rocky platforms and hotel sea decks, or by boat to coves such as Limanağzı. Kaputaş, a beach about 20 km away, is the best-known day trip for a beach.

Is Kaş good for families?

Yes, but check child policies. Some of the most popular small hotels have minimum ages, and peninsula hotels often have steps. Central hotels that accept children of all ages, like Hideaway, or apartments around Büyükçakıl, are easier with small kids.

Can I do Kastellorizo as a day trip from Kaş?

Yes. The crossing is short and most visitors go and return the same day. Check current timetables in our ferry guide.
