For most people crossing from Turkey, the best place to stay in Samos is the town you land in: Vathy (Samos Town) if your ferry docks there, or Pythagorio if it docks on the south coast. Both are walkable from the quay, have plenty of tavernas and are bus hubs. If you want a proper beach village for a few nights, Kokkari on the north coast is the usual pick, about 12 km from Vathy port.

We haven’t stayed at these hotels ourselves; we picked them on location, published details and guest ratings.

Check which port your ferry uses before you book anything. Our Kuşadası to Samos ferry guide covers operators, timings and the two arrival ports.

Short answer

Areas

Area Good for From the ferry port Vibe
Vathy (Samos Town) Short stays, no car, first-timers Port is in town; most central hotels within walking distance Capital, waterfront cafés, museum, year-round town
Pythagorio Couples, families, history Port is in town; about 11 km from Vathy Pretty harbour, busy in summer, near the airport
Potokaki / Pythagorio coast Families, resort stays About 2 km from Pythagorio harbour Long beach strip, large hotels with pools
Kokkari Beach holidays, couples About 12 km from Vathy port Small fishing-village resort, windy north coast
Karlovasi Quiet, local feel, west of the island About 35 km from Vathy Second town, university, harbour, few tourists

Vathy (Samos Town)

Vathy sits at the end of a deep bay on the north-east coast, and the port is right in town. From the terminal it is a short walk along the waterfront to the main square, cafés and shops. The KTEL bus stop is beside the port, so Vathy works well as a base if you don’t rent a car. The Archaeological Museum is within walking distance, and Gagou beach is at the port end of the bay.

The downside is that Vathy is a working town rather than a beach resort. Gagou is the nearest beach; for better swimming you will take a bus or taxi to the south or north coast. Parts of the old town climb steeply uphill, so check whether your hotel is on the waterfront or on the slope. Vathy suits a first visit, a one- or two-night stay, and anyone travelling with a backpack and no car.

Pythagorio

Pythagorio is the island’s best-known harbour town, on the south-east coast about 11 km from Vathy. It is built around a small bay, with red-roofed houses, narrow lanes and a waterfront lined with tavernas. The ferry piers are next to the customs building, and the area around the harbour is largely pedestrianised. The Tunnel of Eupalinos and the Heraion (Temple of Hera) are close by, and the airport is about 3 km from the port.

It gets busy in July and August, and hotel prices in the harbour itself are higher than in Vathy. Pythagorio suits couples, families and anyone interested in the archaeological sites, and it is the easy choice if your ferry from Kuşadası docks here.

Potokaki and the Pythagorio coast

West of Pythagorio, the coast towards Potokaki is a long strip of beach with some of the island’s larger resort hotels. You get pools, sun loungers and a calmer beach day, and you are still within roughly 2 km of Pythagorio. The airport is right behind this stretch.

The trade-off is that you will want a taxi, a hire car or a bike to get around, and the area feels more like a resort zone than a village. It suits families and anyone planning a few days of pool and beach rather than sightseeing.

Kokkari

Kokkari is a former fishing village on the north coast, about 12 km west of Vathy port. The promenade is lined with tavernas and cafés, and the main beach is coarse pebble. Lemonakia and Tsamadou beaches are a short way west of the village. Local KTEL minibuses link Kokkari with Vathy in roughly 15–20 minutes.

The north coast is often windy, which is why Kokkari is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers; on some days the sea is choppy. Many rooms are taken by package tours in high season, so book early. Kokkari suits couples and anyone staying three nights or more who wants a beach base with village atmosphere.

Karlovasi

Karlovasi, in the north-west, is the island’s second town and its commercial centre, about 35 km from Vathy. It has a harbour, a university campus that keeps the town lively outside summer, neoclassical mansions and large churches.

It is a long way from the ports used by most Kuşadası ferries, so it only makes sense if you are staying several days, have a car, or are arriving on a route that uses Karlovasi port. It suits travellers who want a quieter, less touristy side of the island.

Practical tips

Arriving by ferry from Turkey

Ferries from Kuşadası arrive either in Vathy (north-east) or in Pythagorio (south-east), depending on the operator and the day. Check the arrival port on your ticket, then book your hotel in that town or along a bus route from it. Routes from Seferihisar (Sığacık) also run to Samos; check which port they use for your date.

Passport control and customs are at the port, so allow time after docking before heading to your hotel.

When to book

July and August are the busiest months, and Kokkari and Pythagorio fill up first. For those months, book several weeks ahead, especially for hotels with pools or sea views. In May, June, September and early October there is usually more choice at shorter notice.

Best months

Late May to June and September are the most comfortable: warm sea, fewer crowds and lower prices than in high summer. Ferry services from Kuşadası run most frequently between May and mid-October; outside that period there are fewer sailings. Off-season, Vathy is the safest base because it is a year-round town.

Getting around

You can manage without a car if you stay in Vathy, Pythagorio or Kokkari and use the KTEL buses and taxis. A hire car is worth it if you want to explore the west coast, mountain villages or beaches beyond the bus routes. Car rental offices are in both port towns.

FAQ

Is it better to stay in Vathy or Pythagorio?

Stay in the town where your ferry docks, especially for one or two nights. Vathy is the capital, open all year, with the main bus hub. Pythagorio is prettier and closer to the airport, beaches and ancient sites, but busier and pricier in summer.

Can I visit Samos as a day trip from Kuşadası?

Yes. Crossings are short and many people go over and back in a day. An overnight stay gives you time to see Pythagorio, the Heraion or a beach without rushing for the evening ferry. See our Kuşadası to Samos ferry guide for timings.

Where should families stay in Samos?

The Pythagorio coast towards Potokaki has larger hotels with pools and children’s pools, and a long beach. Kokkari also has family-friendly hotels with pools. If you have small children and no car, a hotel near the port saves taxi trips.

Is Kokkari worth it for a short stay?

For one night, probably not, since it is about 12 km from Vathy port. For three nights or more, it is a good beach base. Expect wind on the north coast; the beaches west of the village can be calmer on some days.

Do I need a car in Samos?

Not if you stay in Vathy, Pythagorio or Kokkari and stick to the main sights and beaches. KTEL buses connect the ports and main villages. Rent a car if you want to explore the west or the mountain villages.
